The Hinkley PSG invites you to join us for a round table discussion and networking on the topic of Leadership, People and Culture in New Nuclear. Themes that we will be exploring, and will be inviting you to share your experience and challenges with, include:

  • Purpose and alignment: the nuclear industry’s purpose is to contribute to net zero by 2050, yet only 26% of people aged 18-24 understand that nuclear power is a low-carbon energy source according to iMechE data. How can the industry align to change this?
  • Diversity and Inclusion – just 20% of employees are female and the representation of ethnic minorities leaves much room for improvement. Not only is this not aligned with our society, but lack of diversity can stifle new ideas and hinder change. What steps can leaders (who are predominantly white and male) be encouraged to take, not only to improve diversity, but also to create an environment of psychological safety in which team members feel able to speak up and share their ideas.
  • Balancing Risk and Innovation: a culture that exhibits conservatism and high compliance can impact on project and programme delivery. Teams don’t like project uncertainty, and this can inhibit innovation and continuous improvement. But to achieve net zero, the industry needs to move faster. How can leaders balance the need for safety and security with the need to innovate?
  • Resourcing and Retention: the very nature of nuclear lends itself to large, highly resourced, very intensive projects, such as HPC. How do you attract the right people quickly, in the knowledge that they might no longer have a job once the project ends?

The discussion, which will held under Chatham House Rules, will be facilitated by Peter Quintana from hgkc, with expert input from Jon Bailey, Director of Industrial Services at Nuvia UK; Lee Jones, Growth Director at Elev-8; and Stuart Pearce, Director at Journey4.
